Coalition opposes nuclear waste reprocessing in Minn.

A coalition of environmentalists and peace activists will ask Minnesota members of Congress to oppose any legislation promoting nuclear waste reprocessing.

The groups don't want reprocessing to get a boost in climate and energy legislation Congress will begin debating soon, and they're sending a letter to Minnesota's congressional delegation on Wednesday to express their concerns.

Reprocessing nuclear waste extracts plutonium that can be used to fuel nuclear reactors, but the groups say it can also be used to make nuclear weapons. They also say it's dangerous and comes with environmental risks.

The groups include Environment Minnesota, Women Against Military Madness, the Sierra Club North Star Chapter and several others.
