Seifert says either governor's seat or out of Minn. politics

It's up or out of Minnesota government for Republican state Rep. Marty Seifert.

The 13-year legislator from Marshall said Thursday he won't attempt to reclaim his House seat if his campaign for governor falters.

Seifert said he wants GOP convention delegates to know he isn't "looking in the rearview mirror" as he campaigns for their endorsement. His decision also allows candidates to replace him to step forward in a politically competitive district.

Democratic gubernatorial candidates Margaret Anderson Kelliher and Susan Gaertner also say they'll leave their current political posts after 2010 no matter what. Kelliher is the House speaker and Gaertner is the chief Ramsey County prosecutor.

Eight other legislators campaigning for governor haven't announced how they'll handle their existing offices.
