DNR designating more MN lakes 'infested waters'

The discovery of an exotic species is prompting stricter rules for anglers on Upper and Lower Twin lakes in Hubbard and Wadena counties.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources says it's designating the lakes as "infested waters" because of the faucet snail discovery. The snail is host to a parasite linked to waterfowl deaths on Lake Winnibigoshish and in the Mississippi River near Winona.

The DNR says a resident on Lower Twin Lake noticed the snails attached to his boat. New regulations will go into effect to prevent the movement of the snail to other waters.

Anglers and boaters on Upper and Lower Twin lakes will have to remove all aquatic plants from boats, trailers and equipment. Anglers also will be barred from harvesting bait from those waters.
