Off-duty officer involved in shooting in St. Louis Park put on leave

The Hennepin County medical examiner's office has released the name of the man who was shot by an off-duty police officer during a traffic stop in St. Louis Park Tuesday morning.

Jason Anthony Martin, 29, of Blaine, died of multiple gun shot wounds at the scene.

The St. Louis Park Police Department said officer John Herman had finished his shift at the police station and was driving at about 2:20 a.m. when he saw a pickup truck driving erratically on Minnetonka Blvd.

Police said Herman stopped the vehicle on a side street, and ended up struggling with at least one of the two men in the truck. He fatally shot one of them, police said.

The other man was arrested by the Hennepin County Sheriff's office on an outstanding warrant.

Herman was treated for minor injuries at a local hospital and has since been released, police said in a news release issued Tuesday afternoon.

Police said Herman was driving a personal vehicle at the time of the incident. He has been placed on paid administrative leave, pending an investigation by the Hennepin County Sheriff's office.

The officer is a 5 ½-year veteran of the department with a clean record, police said.
