MnSCU reports surge in underrepresented students

The Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system is reporting a surge in the sort of students who in the past often didn't attend college.

It's a diverse group the system calls underrepresented students. It includes students of color, low income students and students whose parent didn't attend college.

From the fall of 2008 to the fall of 2009, enrollment of new underrepresented students is up 22 percent, or over 14,000 students. Just among low income students, the number up 37 percent or 6,500 students.

Increasing the number of underrepresented students in the system's two- and four-year colleges has been a priority for the system for several years.

The MnSCU trustees are scheduled to get a breakdown of the numbers during their board meeting Wednesday.
