Minn. man pleads not guilty in trophy buck case
A Cannon Falls man accused of poaching a world-class whitetail deer has pleaded not guilty.
Troy Alan Reinke, 32, appeared Thursday in Goodhue County District Court on 13 counts of illegally taking deer.
He's accused of shooting the world's largest eight-point buck, as measured by antler size, on Halloween night, before the firearms season opened, after he had already taken two deer even though he been issued only one permit tag.
Reinke first told the Department of Natural Resources he shot the buck with a bow and arrow. He later changed his story, saying he found it dead and slipped an arrow into the wound. He told a similar story to the St. Paul Pioneer Press before the hearing, but refused to talk to reporters afterward.
His next hearing is Dec. 21.
