First comes the census. Then comes the political mapmaking.
Minnesota legislators are preparing for the second phase. A special legislative commission meets Friday to start getting ready for the once-a-decade redistricting.
New political maps will be drawn to account for population shifts uncovered by the 2010 census. That national head count determines how many congressional seats each state gets, and each district is supposed to be roughly equal in population size.
Minnesota's legislative districts will also be reshaped.
The Legislative Coordinating Commission's Subcommittee on Redistricting planned to discuss its budget, timetable and other topics during the hearing. The committee has bipartisan membership.
