Split Rock Lighthouse celebrates its 100th anniversary next year with a series of special events.

More than 120,000 visitors a year tour the lighthouse and keeper's home along the rocky cliff on Lake Superior near Two Harbors.

The celebration kicks off Jan. 8. The public is invited to the site for the unveiling of an original commemorative watercolor by Minnesota artist Jim Povich.

A "Centennial Summer Celebration" gets under way on May 1 at the History Center in St. Paul. Costumed lighthouse keepers will be on hand, and there will be displays, crafts and music celebrating Split Rock's anniversary.

From May through November, visitors to the lighthouse can attend special programs and the lighting of the beacon the first Friday evening of each month.
