Bomb threat closes Wis. Capitol

Police are investigating a bomb threat that forced them to evacuate the state Capitol in Madison.

State Department of Administration spokeswoman Carla Vigue says 911 operators received the threat, and that the evacuation began around 3 p.m. Tuesday.

Vigue says Capitol police officers searched the building in Madison for a suspicious man with a bag but found nothing. She says the investigation continues. Workers were allowed back into the Capitol about 90 minutes after the evacuation began, and full public access will resume Wednesday.

A Starbucks near the Capitol was also briefly evacuated because of a suspicious package, but it was not a threat.

She says Gov. Jim Doyle was en route to Madison from an event in Oconomowoc when he was told of the threat. The governor went to his mansion not the Capitol.
