Winter lake trout season opens Jan. 1 in BWCA

The winter season for lake trout on all lakes located entirely within the Boundary Waters Canoe Area opens Friday and runs through March 31.

In past years, according to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, winter lake trout season dates were the same for lakes within and outside the Boundary Waters.

But legislation enacted after the 2009 regulations were printed moved up the lake trout opener on lakes entirely within the BWCA to

Jan. 1. The winter season for lake trout lakes outside and partially outside the BWCA remains the same: Jan. 15-March 31. Lakes partially outside the BWCA include Snowbank, Magnetic, Seagull, Clearwater, East Bearskin and Saganaga.

The winter season for stream trout lakes remain unchanged: Jan. 15-March 31.
