Man rescued from Mississippi River in Sartell

A St. Cloud man is recovering after falling through the ice on the Mississippi River in Sartell.

The Stearns County sheriff's office says 46-year-old Robert Potvin was found hanging onto an ice ledge in open water Tuesday. Members of the Sartell Fire Department, wearing cold-weather rescue suits and using an inflatable boat, walked onto the ice and brought Potvin to shore.

Potvin was in good condition Tuesday at St. Cloud Hospital.

According to the sheriff's office, Potvin told rescuers he was walking on the edge of the ice along the open water to see how thick the ice was when he fell through.
