Memorials set for veteran editor Howell

A pair of memorial services for former Washington Post ombudsman and Minnesota newspaper editor Deborah Howell have been scheduled for later this month.

The first will be held at 11:30 a.m. Jan. 15 at the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C., the same day Howell would have turned 69.

The second is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 23, at Central Presbyterian Church in St. Paul.

The services were announced Wednesday by the city of St. Paul. Howell was the stepmother of Mayor Chris Coleman.

Howell died Jan. 1 when she was struck by a car in New Zealand.

Howell was raised in Texas and worked for newspapers there before moving to Minnesota, where she worked as a reporter and editor for the Minneapolis Star. She later was top editor at the St. Paul Pioneer Press, which won two Pulitzers under her leadership.

Howell also served as Washington bureau chief and editor of Newhouse News Service, which also won a Pulitzer while she was there. She was ombudsman at the Post from 2005 to 2008.
