Minn. waives 5-percent biodiesel requirement

Due to the cold weather, Minnesota is temporarily waiving its requirement that No. 1 diesel fuel include 5 percent biodiesel.

The Minnesota Department of Commerce says it's a response to industry concerns that the 5 percent biodiesel mandate could lead to clogged fuel filters in extremely cold weather.

The department says "a small segment" of diesel users have experienced problems with clogged filters.

Deputy Commissioner Jim Pearson says the reports are isolated and have come primarily from southwestern and northern Minnesota. He says they're not sure how many vehicles are involved, but most of the reports seem to involve tractors or Bobcats instead of trucks.

Fuel and filter samples are being tested, and officials and experts will discuss the concerns later this month.
