Minnesota 2009 corn crop largest crop on record
Minnesota's corn farmers produced their largest crop ever in 2009.
New figures from the U.S. Department of Agriculture on Tuesday say Minnesota's corn production is estimated at 1.25 billion bushels, breaking the previous record of 1.19 billion bushels set in 2005.
The state's corn yield is estimated at 175 bushels per acre, up 11 bushels an acre over 2008.
Minnesota's soybean crop is estimated at 285 million bushels, up 8 percent from 2008, but below the record 2006 harvest of 319 million bushels. The state's estimated soybean yield was 40 bushels per acre, up two bushels from last year.
Nationally, the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service says U.S. farmers produced the largest corn and soybean crops on record in 2009, with record yields as well.
