Murder charges filed against 19-year-old in fatal stabbing

The Ramsey County Attorney's office filed murder charges against a 19-year-old man Monday for the fatal stabbing of a St. Paul teenager.

Phillip Eugene Elphage allegedly broke into the St. Paul home of his ex-girlfriend on Jan. 30 and repeatedly stabbed the woman's new boyfriend with a steak knife.

The victim, Darius Derrick Maxwell, died from multiple stab wounds. He was 17 years old.

The former girlfriend had filed an Order for Protection against Elphage prior to the incident. The woman told police that Elphage left her a voicemail message earlier that night saying something like, "I don't know who this guy is, but when I find out, it's going to be something vicious," according to the criminal complaint.

Ramsey County Attorney Susan Gaertner described the case as "particularly disturbing because of the violence and because it happened in violation of a court order for protection," in a statement released Monday.

Elphage, 19, faces one count of second-degree murder in connection with the incident.
