Precinct caucuses to start slimming gov's race

Politically active Minnesotans head to partisan precinct caucuses across the state on Tuesday to start culling a crowded governor's race.

Nonbinding straw polls at Democratic, Independence and GOP caucuses will give an early indication of how the fields are shaping up.

The race features 30 candidates, including 14 Democrats, eight Republicans and five Independence Party hopefuls. Incumbent GOP Gov. Tim Pawlenty won't be on the ballot.

Anyone eligible to vote in the 2010 election can attend a local caucus.

Five political parties are holding caucuses - the Constitution, Democratic-Farmer-Labor, Green, Independence and Republican parties.
