Minn. lawmakers circle August for primary election

Minnesota lawmakers are moving to move up the 2010 primary election to August from its usual September.

The change is intended to bring the state in compliance with a federal law that required more time between the primary and general election. The ultimate goal is to give military and overseas voters enough time to get their absentee ballots in.

The sponsors of the primary bill want to hold the election on Aug. 10. The bill goes before its first Senate committee on Friday and starts its travel through the House next week.

Advocates want to speed through the Legislature to give election administrators time to adjust.
