Mushers, dog teams race to raise money for cancer

Mushers and dog teams will be cloaked in pink on the Gunflint Trail next month in a race to raise money for cancer.

The Mush for a Cure Sled Dog Fundraiser is March 13. It's what is called a "sourdough" start, where mushers wait for the shotgun signal while tucked inside their sleeping bags. When the shotgun is fired, they hop out of their bags, put on their boots and hook up the dogs as the race begins.

The race is 24 miles long. It starts on Gunflint Lake and ends at Trail Center Lodge on Poplar Lake.

Event coordinator Sue Prom says last year's participants and spectators raised over $25,000 for the National Breast Cancer Foundation. The race is part of a weekend festival that includes live music and dancing.
