Minn. Dems looking to override Pawlenty veto this week

DFL legislative leaders say they may try this week to override Gov. Pawlenty's veto of a bill that extends funding for a health care program for some of the state's poorest residents. But the override vote will not come on Monday.

The governor vetoed the bill last week hours after the House and Senate passed it by overwhelming votes. Pawlenty has been in Washington the past few days, and DFL House Majority Leader Tony Sertich said an override attempt won't happen while the governor is out of the state.

"We'll wait until he's back from Washington to hear his concerns," Sertich said. "And as far as our colleagues in an override, I think we take an override when we know people are going to be voting for one. And I think 125 of us voted for it and we only need 90. So I'm under the assumption that if the bill was good enough this week, it should be good enough next week."

House Republican leader Kurt Zellers says he and other Republicans thought the bill would go to a conference committee for changes, not directly to the Senate and then the governor. He said Republicans will back the governor's veto.
