MN bill aims to keep sex offenders from victims

A Minnesota lawmaker wants to give judges the power to keep some juvenile sex offenders away from their victims.

A bill sponsored by Republican Rep. Keith Downey of Edina is slated for an informational hearing in a House committee Friday.

It would allow judges to keep a juvenile sex offender from living within 1,000 feet, or three city blocks from their victim.

This would be an addition to measures judges can already take to rehabilitate juvenile offenders, including placing a child in foster care or regulating their schooling.

The House Crime Victims and Criminal Records Division committee will not take a vote on the bill.
