Minn. snowmobiler missing on Lake of the Woods

A Minnesota man is missing and presumed drowned after his snowmobile went through the ice on the Ontario side of Lake of the Woods.

The Grand Forks Herald reports that 68-year-old Fred Bisel, of Eagle Bend, and another man were traveling near Goose Neck Narrows when one of the machines went through thin ice Sunday evening.

The newspaper quotes the Ontario Provincial Police detachment in Kenora as saying the second man was unable to get to Bisel before losing sight of him.

Because of poor ice conditions and strong currents an immediate search was not possible. An Ontario underwater team is expected to begin searching later this week.

Goose Neck Narrows is about eight miles north of Morson, Ontario, roughly 38 miles northeast of Baudette, Minn.
