Two plead guilty in Red Lake murder case

A 27-year-old man and 23-year-old woman have pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the death of a Red Lake man in October 2009.

Kelly James Maxwell and Natalie Renee Delores Ann Smith, a couple, were indicted by a federal grand jury in November.

According to court documents, Maxwell and Smith killed Curtis Leslie Charles Heinonen, 21, on Oct. 1 and left his naked body under several logs in a yard. Authorities found shoes, pants and boxer shorts in Smith's yard two blocks away. When asked about Heinonen, Smith told authorities she and her boyfriend had beaten him. Maxwell and Smith face life in prison. A sentencing date has not yet been set.
