Longest-serving Republican in Minn. Senate to retire

Sen. Dennis Frederickson, the longest-serving Republican in the Minnesota Senate, is stepping down.

GOP Senate Minority Leader Dave Senjem says Frederickson won't seek a 10th term.

Frederickson has represented a conservative southwestern Minnesota district for 30 years, making him one of the Senate's three most senior members. He serves in a leadership post that puts him in charge of floor debates when the Democratic Senate president is away.

Frederickson was a key supporter of a constitutional amendment dedicating sales tax money to outdoors and cultural programs. He also backed constitutional amendments dedicating lottery profits to environmental projects and enshrining hunting, fishing and trapping as part of Minnesota's heritage.

His district includes the cities of New Ulm, Marshall and Redwood Falls.
