The Red River is continuing a gradual decline in Fargo and should drop below major flood stage Wednesday.
Major stage in Fargo is 30 feet, or 12 feet over flood stage. The river crested this year at 36.99 feet on March 21. It was the seventh-highest recorded crest in the city but the community was prepared and damage was minimal.
Last year the river topped out in Fargo at a record 40.84 feet.
Downstream, the north-flowing river appears to be cresting at Drayton without causing the serious flood threat it did last year, when National Guard troops patrolled a dike. The river might not even get to major flood stage north of Drayton.
Between Oslo, Minn., and Drayton, water still is lapping at Interstate 29, and roads and bridges between I-29 and the Red River remain closed.
