U of M expands financial aid for Minn. students

The University of Minnesota is reminding current and future students about the recent expansion of scholarship money in the U Promise program.

At the beginning of the current academic year, a new middle-income tuition aid program was combined with an existing low-income scholarship program to form U Promise.

The expanded program now guarantees need-based aid to Minnesota resident undergraduates from families making up to $100,000 per year and does not have to be repaid.

Provost Tom Sullivan says in a news release that students who might not have thought they qualified for financial aid in the past may now be eligible.

The expanded U Promise Scholarship started with the Fall 2009 semester. During that semester, 13,329 students received aid through the program.
