Bill raising car fees advances in Minn. House

The annual cost of registering a car in Minnesota could go up a bit under a bill rolling along in the Minnesota House.

The House Finance Committee signed off Tuesday on the bill increasing an administrative portion of registration renewal fees by $1.50. The filing fee would go from $4.50 to $6.

The fee is imposed on top of the actual registration tax, which varies based on the model year and value of a vehicle.

The cost for other vehicle transactions, such as title transfers, would also go up by $1.50.

The bill has at least one more committee stop in the House.

Rep. Rick Hansen said the bump is needed to keep locally based deputy registrars afloat. He noted that a separate $1.75 surcharge used to pay for a technology upgrade is due to expire in 2012.
