Bill would alter election process for Minn. judges
A Minnesota House panel will review a proposal that would change the way Minnesota elects its judges.
Rep. Steve Simon of St. Louis Park is proposing a constitutional amendment that would create retention elections instead of competitive contests. Instead of judges facing opponents, citizens would vote up or down on whether incumbent judges get to keep their post.
If the judges are ousted, a judical selection committee would nominate replacements with the governor making the final choice.
Voters would have to approve the constitutional amendment for it to take effect. It will be considered by the House Civil Justice Committee on Monday.
