Third annual Gunflint Green Up getting under way

The third annual Gunflint Green Up gets under way Friday.

It's being billed as a celebration of renewal after the Ham Lake forest fire, which started near the end of the Gunflint Trail on May 5, 2007, and burned nearly 120 square miles in Minnesota and Canada.

Friday's events are "walks and talks," including a preview of a new Gunflint Trail history museum that will hold its grand opening July 4, and a hike along the new Centennial Trail, which crosses areas affected by the Ham Lake Fire and was replanted during last year's Green Up.

On Saturday, volunteers will "release" many of the 100,000 little pine trees planted during previous Green Ups by trimming away the competing underbrush to allow the sunshine in. The day will be capped by a thank-you dinner and dance at Gunflint Lodge.
