Minneapolis police settle excessive force lawsuit
The city of Minneapolis has agreed to pay $235,000 to settle a lawsuit filed by a man who was tackled and punched by police officers during an arrest last year.
The altercation between Derryl Jenkins and a group of Minneapolis police officers in February 2009 was captured by a squad car video camera.
Officers wrestled Jenkins to the ground, and while he was down several officers punched and kicked him.
Jenkins sustained cuts and bruises, and later sued the department for excessive force. One of the officers was hurt in the struggle as well.
The incident led the police department to review its policy on the use of force, and led chief Tim Dolan to ask the FBI for an independent investigation of the officers' conduct.
Under the terms of the settlement, the city will pay Jenkins $150,000 and his lawyers $85,000.
