Candidates who get cold feet about running for office can still get out.

The deadline to get off the ballot in federal, state and county races is 5 p.m. on Thursday.

The filing period for candidates closed on Tuesday, with 17 hopefuls stepping forward in Minnesota's open governor's race and primary challengers emerging for three U.S. representatives. All but a handful of legislative races feature at least two candidates.

Would-be politicians who pull out of the election lose filing fees that range from $50 for county offices to $300 for governor, U.S. House and the state Legislature.
