UAW endorses Kelliher

The United Auto Workers union today endorsed Democrat Margaret Anderson Kelliher's campaign for governor.

Kelliher, who won the DFL endorsement for governor in April, has now secured the backing of several major unions including Education Minnesota, The Minnesota Nurses Association and the Minnesota Association of Professional Employees. She said the endorsements will help her win the primary and general election.

"We have people power with us and the endorsement of the United Auto Workers brings more people to the campaign," she said. "More volunteers on the ground. More feet on the ground. This is a door by door, voter by voter campaign."

There are about 3,000 UAW members in Minnesota. A union leader said they decided to back Kelliher because she passed legislation that would give tax breaks to Ford Motor Company to keep St. Paul's Ford plant running.

Kelliher is running in the August primary against former U.S. Sen. Mark Dayton and former legislator Matt Entenza.
