$4M repair project for Minn. Capitol dome starts

The Minnesota Capitol dome is getting a $4 million repair job.

The seven-month project will fix a deteriorated system designed to keep most water out of the dome and manage the water that gets in. It also includes new windows, repairs to steel beams holding up the structure and better ventilation for the dome and the rotunda.

Crews are building an exterior elevator on the north side of the Capitol.

They will also put up temporary scaffolding on the same level as the golden sculpture of horses called the Quadriga, which will stay open for tours.

The rotunda chandelier will be taken down in the fall for cleaning and work on the dome. It will go back up before the Legislature convenes next January.
