Investigators close case on 12-year-old homicide

Rochester police say they've closed the investigation into the murder of a homeless mother who was found fatally beaten 12 years ago.

A passerby found the body of 43-year-old Cynthia Haisley under a bridge near Kutzky Park in October 1998. Police have always called her companion, Eugene Wilke, a person of interest in the killing, but it wasn't until investigators took a fresh look at the case that they were able to get the evidence necessary for a conviction. But, by then, Wilke had died of natural causes.

Capt. Brian Winters says investigators have determined Wilke caused Haisley's death and that there are no other suspects.

Haisley's daughters, Nina and Nicole Creek, tell The Post-Bulletin of Rochester that their mother was addicted to drugs and alcohol.
