Benefit for slain officer raises over $19,000

A benefit for a slain Maplewood police sergeant drew a huge crowd and raised over $19,000 for his family.

KARE-TV reports that family, friends and even complete strangers came together Friday night at Alary's Bar in downtown Saint Paul to celebrate the life of Joe Bergeron. The block outside was closed in his honor.

Bergeron was shot and killed while on duty May 1 when he was responding to a call about a carjacking. One suspect was later caught after an extensive manhunt. The other suspect was shot and killed by police.

Maplewood Police Chief Dave Thomalla says he wishes he could take the skills Bergeron had, like how he dealt with people, package them, and pass them on to new officers.
