Alpine coaster opens this week in Duluth

The only alpine coaster in the Midwest opens this week at Spirit Mountain in Duluth.

Timber Twister Alpine Coaster is a year-round railed track that will take riders via wheeled cart on a winding journey at speeds up to 26 mph. The approximately seven-minute ride goes through the trees from the top of Spirit Mountain to the bottom followed by a 1,500-foot ride back up the hill.

It's the fifth ride of its kind in the nation.

The Duluth News Tribune reports that Spirit Mountain expects to sell about 53,000 individual rides this year. That's more than enough to meet the attraction's break-even point of 35,000 rides annually.
