Minn. group: AT&T to hold off on 450-foot tower
BC-MN--BWCA-Cell Tower Lawsuit, 1st Ld-Writethru,0147 Eds: APNewsNow. Updates with comment from AT&T. MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - An environmental group says AT&T Mobility has agreed to halt construction on 450-foot cell phone tower on a ridge just outside the Boundary Waters Canoe Area.
The Friends of the Boundary Waters Wilderness says the tower would rise 600 feet over the landscape and be visible from several lakes. The group filed a lawsuit saying the tower would cause harm to the wilderness.
Group spokesman Paul Danicic tells the Pioneer Press that AT&T has agreed to stop construction pending an Aug. 4 court hearing.
AT&T spokeswoman Amy Grundman says the company's only comment is that the Lake County Planning Commission has determined there's a need for a communications tower at that site.

The Lake County Board approved the tower near Ely in February.
