Poor planning has left an $8.8 million state facility vacant, nearly eight months after it was built to house aging convicts and sex offenders in St. Peter.
The Free Press of Mankato says the St. Peter Regional Treatment Center remains closed because inspectors have cited it for numerous violations. In one case, one hallway is an inch too narrow to meet health and fire codes.
The Free Press has asked state agencies and the private contractors involved in the work to release documents that could help explain whether designers or builders are at fault. The newspaper's requests have been denied.
State Rep. Terry Morrow says he too is waiting for answers. The St. Peter Democrat wants to know how much it will cost to fix the problems and how long the work will take.
