Probation sought for Minn. man for lying to FBI

The defense wants probation for a Minnesota man who admitted lying to FBI agents investigating the case of missing Somali men.

Attorney Earl Gray says Abdow M. Abdow had never been arrested before. Gray is asking the federal court next week to sentence Abdow to probation or else probation with home detention.

Federal guidelines recommend a sentence of 10 to 16 months on the single count, but the judge is not bound by them.

In May, Abdow acknowledged lying about his travels last October to two FBI agents assisting a grand jury looking into the disappearance of young men believed to be going to Somalia to fight for an alleged terrorist group.

Abdow, a U.S. citizen of Somali descent, was never charged with direct involvement with the alleged terrorist group.
