DPS: Law enforcement speed patrols increase in July

Minnesota law enforcement agencies statewide are stepping up their speed patrols in July.

The July effort includes roughly 400 agencies, and it supplements an ongoing yearlong speeding enforcement campaign that started back in October. Data from the Department of Public Safety shows the percentage of motorists driving 10 mph over the speed limit has slightly decreased during the enforcement period.

The speed patrols include a focus on aggressive driving, such as tailgating or abrupt lane changes. Over 22,000 motorists have been stopped for speeding since October.

DPS says the cost of speeding violations varies by county. Drivers going over 100 mph can lose their license for six months.

DPS says illegal and unsafe speeding is a factor in roughly 130 deaths each year.
