Schwan's cuts sodium in school pizzas early

Food maker Schwan's says kids this fall will be eating less sodium in their pizzas - a year earlier than the company initially planned.

The Schwan Food Co. also says it cut more salt from its Big Daddy's brand pizza beyond its 10 percent goal.

Schwan's serves pizza to three-quarters of the nation's schools. Earlier this year Schwan's said it would cut sodium by 10 percent by fall 2011.

But now Schwan's says it cut sodium by between 15 percent and 25 percent and the pizza will be in schools this fall.

Food makers such as ConAgra and Kraft have been cutting sodium in food under pressure from the government and shoppers.

Schwan's is based in Marshall, Minn. and make brands such as Tony's and Freschetta.
