Off-duty Illinois cop fires gun at Winona campsite

Prosecutors in Winona are investigating if charges should be filed in an incident where an off-duty police officer from Illinois fired her gun into the ground at a campsite after she interrupted a dispute.

The Winona Daily News reports that the officer from Geneva, Illinois, thought she heard a man threaten to kill a woman at another campsite just after 1 a.m. Sunday. Deputy Police Chief Tom Williams says the officer drew her gun and approached the site with her badge and flashlight, after which a man began moving toward her and yelling, "shoot me."

When a second man began to approach as well, the officer fired her .380 caliber handgun into the ground. She then called local police. Williams says the officer had not been drinking.

Williams says prosecutors will decide whether the shooting was reasonable and will consider the size and behavior of those involved.
