Event in Mpls. celebrates 20 years of the ADA
People with disabilities and supporters will hold an event Monday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Nicollet Island Pavillion in Minneapolis to celebrate the anniversary Americans with Disabilities Act.
Monday marks the 20th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act, or ADA. The federal legislation seeks to ensure equal opportunity for people with disabilities to employment, government services, public accommodations, commercial facilities, and transportation.
Politicians including U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar and former U.S. Sen. David Durenberger will speak.
Event organizer Cindy Tarshish said people with disabilities have made progress over the last 20 years but have to keep fighting.
"There still is discrimination out there," Tarshish said. "So we've really made great strides, but we can't let our guard down. We got to keep moving forward to be sure that everyone knows how to implement the ADA."
Admission and food are free at the event and Tarshish said it will go on rain or shine.
