Minnesota officials want motorists to put
down the cell phone and drive.


      Nearly 100 Minnesota law enforcement agencies will conduct a
one-day crackdown on distracted driving Thursday.


      The state Department of Public Safety plans a news conference to
announce Gov. Tim Pawlenty's proclaimed "Distraction Free Driving
Day."


      The department's Office of Traffic Safety also is launching a
print and radio campaign to educate drivers about Minnesota's
two-year-old law banning texting while driving.


      The campaign includes print ads that compare texting thumbs to
dangerous weapons.


      Officials say driver distraction is a leading factor in crashes
in Minnesota - accounting for about a quarter of all crashes
annually.
