Lake Crystal shooting death ruled a homicide

The shooting death of a Lake Crystal man has been ruled a homicide.

A preliminary autopsy concluded Thursday that 26-year-old James Mervin Nibbe died of a single gunshot wound.

Authorities are still saying little about what happened at Nibbe's home Tuesday morning. It was initially reported as a burglary. Sheriff Brad Peterson says releasing any additional information could compromise the investigation.

But the Blue Earth County sheriff's office and Bureau of Criminal Apprehension say they continue to believe it's an isolated incident and there's no risk to public safety. The say it will take some time for test results to come back from the crime lab.

Nibbe's wife, Jennifer, was treated and released from a Mankato hospital after the incident, and her son was also home at the time.
