Attorney plans move of crashed Toyota out of police custody
An attorney for Koua Fong Lee, who was freed from jail last month after prosecutors dropped charges related to a car accident four years ago, says he's planning to move Lee's car this week.
Lee was driving a 1996 Toyota Camry when he crashed into another car, killing three people.
Lee's attorney Brent Schafer said he plans to move the car out of police custody by the end of this week, whether or not a deal on who controls access to the car is finalized.
"We will follow the protective order which requires us not to examine or not to enter into the facility without all other parties being noticed and having an opportunity to be there," Schafer said. "But the issue is that we don't want anybody else being able to open up that storage building and get in and have access to that vehicle other than the true owner, Mr. Lee."
Schafer said he hopes a protective order involving attorneys for the victims' families and Toyota can be in place before he moves the car.
The order would set terms for access to the car as civil suits against Toyota move through the courts.
