Toyota involved in fatal St. Paul crash to be moved

The Toyota Camry involved in a fatal accident in St. Paul four years ago will be moved out of police custody Friday. Koua Fong Lee was driving the 1996 Camry when he crashed into another car. The car is now the subject of multiple civil lawsuits against Toyota.

Lee and attorneys for the family members of the victims hurt and killed in the accident recently reached agreement with Toyota over access to the car. Under the terms, Lee's attorneys will control the storage locker that will house the vehicle.

Lee's attorney Brent Schafer says the car will be moved out of the police impound lot by a specialized towing company that has experience in moving vehicles that are potential sources of evidence.

"They will hoist it onto a flatbed. A forklift will be used if necessary, and then it will be transported and placed into a storage locker at the storage facility," said Schafer.

Lee was freed from jail last month, after prosecutors dropped charges against him for the 2006 accident that killed three people. A judge ruled that evidence of potential sudden acceleration inolving other Toyotas was enough to cast doubt on whether Lee was guilty of a crime for causing the accident.

Lee has claimed since the accident that the car suddenly sped up and did not respond to his attempts to brake.
