Milk production slows in Wis., Minn. in September

September was a good month for most milk-producing states, but not Wisconsin or Minnesota.

Dairy farmers across the nation produced 4 percent more milk last month than they did in September of last year.

One factor was California's significant output. The nation's top milk producer yielded 3.3 billion pounds for the month, an increase of 7 percent from September 2009.

Most other states also saw an increase.

Minnesota saw a 2 percent decrease in the same period, down to 714 million pounds.

The nation's 23 major milk-producing states yielded 14.5 billion pounds in the month.
