Minneapolis closes Plymouth Avenue bridge after corrosion

The city of Minneapolis has closed its Plymouth Avenue Bridge over the Mississippi River to traffic after workers in an annual inspection found corroded cables.

The city says Friday the bridge will stay closed as a safety precaution until repairs can be made.

The bridge north of downtown Minneapolis includes redundancies in its design to ensure that failure in parts of the bridge should not mean failure of the the entire structure.

The city is recommending river crossers on the city's north side us the Broadway Avenue Bridge just six blocks to the south.
