An incumbent Fergus Falls city alderman gets to stay in office after a recount showed he defeated his challenger by a single vote.
The Daily Journal of Fergus Falls reports Alderman Jay Cichosz ended up with 354 votes to challenger Tim Rundquist's 353 votes after the Friday morning recount. A third candidate, Jerry Gullickson, brought up the rear - but not by much. He had 311 votes.
Challenger Rundquist had requested the recount after election returns initially showed Cichosz with a four-vote edge. Elections official Lynne Olson says the three new votes for Rundquist were initially tallied by a voting machine as over-votes.
Rundquist says he's satisfied with the recount despite coming up short, and he says it's proof that every vote counts.
