DNR: Minn. lakes, trails not ready for snowmobiles
It may be cold in Minnesota, but that doesn't mean the ice is safe yet.
The Department of Natural Resources is warning snowmobilers and others to stay off lakes because the ice is too thin.
The DNR says there already have been several ice rescues involving snowmobiles. And a fisherman died when he broke through thin ice on Lake Washington in Blue Earth County.
Lt. Dave Olsen of DNR Enforcement in Grand Rapids says snowmobilers and others should stay off lakes until there is at least five inches of new, clear ice.
And even with the snow, DNR Northeast Parks and Trails Operations Manager Scott Kelling says many snowmobile trails are not yet ready for riding.
